ALABAMA- US state of Alabama has passed a bill to ban abortion in almost all cases with a thumping majority of 25 to 6 in Senate.

The bill had been passed 74-3 earlier this month in Alabama's House of Representatives.

The law is the strictest such law in the entire US with no exemptions for cases of rape or incest. Abortion will only be allowed in certain circumstances to safeguard the mother's health.

Republican governor Kay Ivery will give the final approval to the bill.

The National Organization for Women called the ban "unconstitutional" and said it was "a transparent effort to drum up political support for anti-abortion candidates in upcoming elections".

Restrictions on abortion rights have already been introduced this year in 16 US states.
