intersex day observed at at amritsar based hospital experts from across the country took part in the program

26 October- Few people of Punjab know about the intersex awareness day, The day is observed on 26 October every year Bhatia neuropsychiatric hospital observed “The intersex Awareness day”. This day is internationally designed to highlight the issues faced by the INTERSEX & LGHT( Lesbian Gay Heterosexual Transsexual) communities all over the world.

"Intersex" is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn't seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male.

Dr.JS Bhatia that there is an alarming rise in patients related to this issue and ,there is definitely an urgent need to counsel them. We need to understand their plight and psychological vulnerability.Bhatia said that Some common mental illnesses associated with intersex are depression, low self esteem, persistent anxiety, self harming tendencies etc.

Timely intervention by psychiatrists and counselors is important to help them cope with psychological TRAUMA. he added that there are very few patients who dare to come and discuss their issue.  A large part is struggling and are clueless about this aspect of humanity.

Dr.JS Bhattia said that People whose characteristics are not either all typically male or all typically female at birth are intersex. He said that Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a wide range of natural bodily variations. In some cases, intersex traits are visible at birth while in others, they are not apparent until puberty. He also said that Some chromosomal intersex variations may not be physically apparent at all. 

He further said that these individuals were also referred to as “ hermaphrodite “. This term was slowly phased out because it did not cover all aspects related to anatomy of LGBT or intersex community.

He added that these extraordinary physical and genetic alienation, leads to MENTAL & PSYCHOLOGICAL instabilities. These MENTAL pressures need to be monitored closely. These pressures need to be handled with the help of LIFE SKILL MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING.

He said that at Bhatia neuropsychiatric hospital, along with our life skill training institute, the hermitage, provide counselling to cope up with all these psychiatric issues. These counselings are done in complete secrecy and confidentiality.
