OTTAWA- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued an apology for his brown face photograph that was first shared by Time Magazine in an article.

The photo was taken nearly two decades ago in 2001 at a private school gala. It shows Trudeau with skin darkening makeup on his face and hands at the West Point Grey Academy in Vancouver.

After the publication of the Time article, Trudeau who is battling for re-election as Prime Minister said he had dressed up in the photo in an Aladdin costume at an Arabian Nights-themed gala.

"I take responsibility for my decision to do that. I shouldn't have done it.

"I should have known better. It was something that I didn't think was racist at the time, but now I recognise it was something racist to do and I am deeply sorry."

Opposition leaders are using the photo to criticize Trudeau that too when the re-elections are due to take place on October 21.
