TENNIS- Swiss world number two Roger Federer registered a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Germany’s Mischa Zverev in the first round of the Stuttgart Open on Wednesday.
Federer skipped the whole clay court season to get rest and focus on grass court season. Stuttgart Open is a preparatory tournament for Wimbledon.
“I’m happy to have won a match after losing my last two (Indian Wells, Miami in March),” Federer said.
“This is a new start. I’m glad to have been able to win again, overcoming some difficult moments after being a set down. Mischa’s level dropped in the last two sets and that gave me a chance to win.”
If Federer reaches Sunday’s final, he will replace Nadal as world number one.
German Maximillian Merterer, Indian Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Frenchman Benoit Paire all registered win in their first rounds.
