While the UT excise department has not been able to receive adequate bidders for the liquor vends in sector 17, 9 and other areas of the city, the department has finally decided to resort to basic economics of reducing the reserve price for them. Despite conducting auction for the liquor vends the department could not attract many bidders.

Although this time, the department has been able to fetch more revenue as compared to last year. There are a total of 93 units out of which the department has allotted 89 vends so far. The total revenue fetched by the department in the form of bid amount/license fee is Rs 309.37 crore against total reserve price of Rs 240.09 crore.

Apart from this, to keep a check on the illegal sale of liquor, the excise and taxation department in the excise policy, which came into force from April 1, had made issuance of bill on sale of liquor mandatory. The department has also introduced a penalty to ensure that traders abide by minimum retail sale price.
