FOOTBALL- Former national team captain Fernando Hierro has been appointed as Spanish national team coach for the duration of FIFA World Cup after the sudden sacking of Coach Julen Lopetegui.
Lopetegui was fired on Wednesday, a day after he was appointed as the new coach of Real Madrid. What angered the country’s football association was the fact that they were kept in complete dark about the deal. They immediately fired him even when the World Cup was due to start tomorrow.
It is not certain whether Hierro will continue in the role beyond the finals in Russia. Hierro has been working as Spain’s sporting director since last November.
