FIFA to overhaul world ranking system after World Cup

FOOTBALL- Global soccer governing body FIFA has announced it will attempt to overhaul the world ranking system following the 2018 world cup.

The present method to decide world rankings has been in place since 2006 but in recent years it has come under criticism for enabling countries to boost their position by scheduling low-risk friendlies against weaker opposition. The points from the wins help them to get favorable seedings in major tournaments.

The new system which was approved by FIFA Council on Sunday takes into account the strength of the opponents and the results achieved in knock out stages.

The first ranking updates with the new Elo method will come after the conclusion of World Cup which starts on June 14.
