Multi storey building collapse, Government suspends Superintendent and 2 Junior Engineers

Coming up with strict action against the supervisors of work at the multi-storeyed building of Imperial Gardens Society at Peer Muchalla in Zirakpur that collapsed on April 13, the Department of Local Government, Punjab has finally suspended superintendent Balwinder Singh and junior engineers Rajiv Kumar and Anil Sharma.

It shall be noted that immediately after the incident, Local government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu had initiated probe into the matter in collaboration with Dera Bassi SDM and expert’s team from Punjab Engineering College. The reports depicted that there were major lapses in the construction process. Along with this, there was a serious loophole on the part of the supervisors as the builders had failed to give a notice of construction and also the reports required to be submitted at different stages of the construction.

The government has also issued, show cause notices to other supervisors including AME Sukhwinder Singh, ME Gurpratap Singh, SE Kuldip Verma and EOs SK Aggarwal and Mandeep Singh Gill. Meanwhile, the panel has recommended that the provision of penal action against buildings without the completion and structural safety certificates and the qualified engineers only be assigned the task in case buildings are more than 3 storeyed.
