Lester James Peries, Grand Old man of Sri Lankan cinema, dies aged 99

CINEMA- Pioneering Sri Lankan director Lester James Peries known as the Grand Old Man of Sri Lankan cinema has passed away at the age of 99. He breathed his last on Sunday.

His Wekande Walauwa (2002), adapted from Anton Chekov’s short story The Cherry Orchard, was first Sri Lankan submission in the foreign language Oscar category. 

His debut feature film, Rekava was nominated for a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1956.

He is survived by his wife, Sumitra Peries, a well-known filmmaker.
