The much-awaited Mayoral Elections for the post of Chandigarh Mayor, Senior Deputy and Deputy Mayor finally ended with thumping majority for BJP. The BJP candidate Davesh Moudgil won the elections with a thumping majority. He obtained 22 out of 27 votes. Along with Moudgil, Gurpreet Dhillon and Vinod Aggarwal have been elected as the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively.

With this, the elections came in as a major blow for Congress as the Congress Mayor candidate Devinder Singh Babla could secure hardly 5 votes. The apology by BJP candidate Deavesh Moudgil to Former Mayor Asha Kumari Jaswal changed the entire thing upside down. Had there been no apologies by Moudgil and the resultant unity in BJP, the results could have been different, as Asha Kumari along with other candidates had also filed their nominations in order to condemn Moudgil’s nominations.

Earlier, the candidature of Davesh Moudgil was not appreciated by the Sanjay Tandon and Asha Jaswal’s faction, due to which there emerged a tiff within the BJP. However, with the intervention of Senior BJP leaders, the dispute was settled and BJP emerged as the winning party. It is notable to mention that the BJP candidate Moudgil is a close aide of BJP MP Kirron Kher, who is also an ex officio member and has a voting right in the Mayoral Elections.
