HOLLYWOOD- Actor Joaquin Phoenix paid tribute to his later brother River Phoenix at the Toronto International Film Festival.

After being presented with the TIFF Tribute Actor Award, the 44 year old actor in his speech thanked his late brother for helping him rediscover his love for acting after early experiences as a child left him disillusioned. River Phoenix died of a drug overdose in 1993, aged 23.

"He said: 'You're going to start acting again,'" recalled the Joker actor.

"He didn't ask me, he told me. And I am indebted to him for that because acting has given me such an incredible life."

Joaquin also thanked his family, sisters Rain, Liberty and Summer and made an oblique reference to his girlfriend Rooney Mara.
