TENNIS- India’s Sumit Nagal reached a step closer in his bid to qualify for his first ever Grand Slam by entering the third and last round of US Open qualifying round.

World number 190 Nagal beat 192 ranked Peter Polansky 7-5, 7-6(0) and will play Brazilian Joao Menezes late on Thursday night in his bid to qualify for the main draw of the US Open.

If Nagal wins the match and enters the main draw, he will be only the fourth Indian after Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri and Prajnesh Gunneswaran to reach the milestone.

In the men’s singles main draw, Prajnesh faces fifth seed and recent Cincinnati champion Daniil Medvedev in the first round.
