Six killed as severe tornadoes and hailstorms hit Greece

Six tourists lost their lives and other 30 were injured after severe weather hit northern Greece late on Wednesday.

Gale force winds, heavy rain and hailstorms lashed Halkidiki, near the city of Thessaloniki with the beach resort of Porto Carras bearing brunt of the unprecedented weather.

A Czech couple, two Romanians and two Russians lost their lives in different accidents across the region.

A state of emergency was immediately declared with at least a hundred rescue workers deployed to take people to safety.

Greece's minister for citizen protection, Michalis Chryssohoidis, is due to visit the region on Thursday.
