Italian Olympic swimmer Filippo Magnini saved a man from drowning who had married his partner just two days ago.

Newlywed Andrea Benedetto was floating on an inflatable unicorn with his husband when he fell into the water. Because of a medical condition, he could not move his limbs and started drowning.

The couple and their friends shouted for help and called for the lifeguards who immediately set off in their rescue raft. But 37 year old Magnini was closer and quickly reached the drowning men and kept him above water until the guards arrived.

“The bather was in a lot of trouble: he was quite frightened, he was really stuck and had swallowed some seawater," Magnini said, quoted by Italy's Corriere dello Sport.

Mr Benedetto was taken to hospital shortly afterwards. He thanked Magnini for saving his life but rued that he could not do it personally as he did not have his contact number.

Magnini was on the beach with his girlfriend Giorgia Palmas, a well-known Italian TV celebrity and model.
