TENNIS- Australian Ashleigh Barty claimed her maiden Grand Slam title on Saturday with a straight set 6-1, 6-3 win over Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova in the French Open final.

Barty who also played for Australia in the Women’s Big Bash League has praised her cricket experience for readying her for a tennis comeback.

Barty stepped away from tennis in 2014 and signed for BBL franchise Brisbane Heat. She played cricket for nearly a year before returning to tennis in 2016.

"It truly was an amazing period of my life," Barty said of her cricket career. "I met an amazing group of people who couldn't care less whether I could hit a tennis ball or not.”

Barty's coach Craig Tyzzer also believes that her switch of sports was critical in her subsequent tennis success.
