TENNIS- Serbian Novak Djokovic automatically entered the semi-final of Madrid Open today after Marin Cilic withdrew from the event due to food poisoning on Friday.

Djokovic had defeated Taylor Fritz and Jeremy Chardy in the second and third rounds respectively. Djokovic was due to face Cilic in the last 8 but he had to pull out.

“Dear fans, Madrid Open organisers, Novak Djokovic, I am sorry to announce that I must withdraw from today’s match,” said the Croatian on Twitter.

“I have had a terrible night dealing with a case of food poisoning. I am extremely disappointed to have my time in Madrid end in this way. Thank you for the support.”

Djokovic will face the winner of the quarter-final between Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem in the semi-final on Saturday.
