Gordon Banks, England’s World Cup winning goalkeeper, dies aged 81

FOOTBALL- England’s world cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks has died at the age of 81. He passed away in his sleep on Tuesday.

Banks was part of the 1966 World Cup winning team and produced one of the greatest ever saves to thwart Pele in 1970. He lost an eye in a car crash in 1972 that brought his career to an abrupt end.

His family announced in a statement, “It is with great sadness that we announce that Gordon passed away peacefully overnight. We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him.”
