I knew within seconds of arriving at the airport that I’d missed my flight, which was funny because I turned up two hours before I was due to fly.

Let’s say you missed your flight because you have an expired id or passport. This is a personal mistake you should have caught before you departed. Most airlines will allow you to reschedule. A fee of $200 or more plus the difference in fare applies on most airlines.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled by four hours, then your insurance will cover the costs for another flight to get you to your next destination. There’s no need to wait for standby, just book a flight with any airline and be on your way. Check the Terms of Your Flight.

Airlines often charge you for a new ticket if you miss a flight, there are important exceptions. But to find out if you qualify, you need to act fast. Calling the airline before your departure can significantly increase your chances of getting rebooked on the next flight at no additional charge.

Most airlines have an informal "flat tire" rule that allows them to book you on the next available flight if you have a good reason for getting to the airport late, like, say, a flat tire.

Those may include a medical emergency, an accident on the way to the airport or some documentable event beyond your control. Typically, sleeping through your alarm doesn't count, but agents have some flexibility in how they can apply the flat tire rule.

You should do Prior WEB - CHECKin, in that case, if you are 30 mins late, then you will be entertained and flight can wait for 5 mins for you.

if its more than 5 mins, the flight heads for take-off. As the airline's people have to pay a hefty amount to keep the flight in an airport of respective cites, if its big cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai. the waiting charges will be charged in thousands. so, they don't wait for passengers.

As said by other people, you should politely ask for alternative flights on the same route and pay the differential fare, I saw Indigo staff are more friendly than Jet and Spice Jet.

Finally, next time, keep a note that if you making a journey, then make a journey through one medium if flight then all through a flight, if train all journey thru train. This actually saves times to run from Train station to Airports.

Returning to my personal experience, when it’s all said and done, and you made it to your destination, minus a few hours, pounds and pride, you’ll look back on that missed flight and laugh.
