TENNIS- The Indian Davis Cup team led by Mahesh Bhupathi will most likely travel to Pakistan to play an away Asia-Oceania Zone Group 1 tie scheduled for mid-September.
India lost to Italy in the World Group qualifiers last week to slip back to Group 1 of Asia Oceania Zone.
It has been reported that Indian government is not likely to oppose the team’s travel to Pakistan as the match is important for India to again qualify for the World Group. If Indian team does not show at Pakistan, International Tennis Federation (ITF) can either impose a heavy fine or can bar India from competing in few ITF events.
Government sources believes there will not be any problem if the Davis Cup team visits Pakistan for two days. The political attention is usually reserved for high profile cricket or hockey games.
