FOOTBALL- Kathryn Mayorga, who has accused football star Cristiano Ronaldo of raping her in 2009, says the #MeToo movement encouraged her to speak out.

Mayorga’s lawyer Leslie Stovall said, “The MeToo movement and the women who have stood up and disclosed sexual assaults has given Kathryn a lot of courage.”

Ronaldo has denied the allegations. Earlier he called the report by Germany magazine Der Spiege as fake news and later took to Twitter to air his views.

He tweeted, “I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in. Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.”

He continued, “My clear conscious will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations.”

As per reports, Mayorga had filed a police report shortly after the incident in 2009 but next year she reached an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo involving a $375,000 (£288,000) payment to never disclose the incident.

Her lawyers are now seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement void.
