WASHINGTON- A US federal judge has ordered a plane to come back to the United States after learning that a mother and her daughter have been deported mid appeal.
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was representing the family of two apart from other mothers and their children in a lawsuit. The government had pledged not to deport anyone in the case before Friday at the earliest, the ACLU said.
Washington DC District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan said it was unacceptable they had been removed while lawyers argued their case.
Complying with the court's order, Department of Homeland Security said in a statement, “Upon arrival in El Salvador, the plaintiffs did not disembark and are currently en route back to the United States.”
The judge also said Attorney General Jeff Sessions could be held in contempt of court for the deportation.
