Russia’s Sergei Ignashevich retires after world Cup exit

FOOTBALL- Russian defender Sergei Ignashevich announced his retirement from football after his team’s loss to Croatia in the FIFA 2018 World cup quarter-final on Saturday.

 The 38-year-old holds the Russian record for most international appearances with 127 matches.

In a video statement released by the Russian team, Ignashevich says “I feel pleasure and peace because I’m finishing on a high note by playing at the World Cup, in a quarterfinal with an excellent team and an excellent coach.”

He also said he now plans to become a coach.
