Wimbledon 2018: Past champs Maria Sharapova, Kvitova crash out

TENNIS- Two time former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, seeded eighth, was beaten by Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the first round on Tuesday.

It was curtains for former champion Maria Sharapova of Russia who was beaten by unseeded Russian Viatia Diatchenko 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/3), 6-4.

It was Sharapova’s first ever defeat in the opening round at the All England Club.

Diatchenko will face Sofia Kenin of the United States for a place in the last 32.

Earlier on Tuesday, defending champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain, seeded third defeated Naomi Broady of Great Britain 6-2, 7-5.

“I’m back, it’s always good, I’m thinking to win and actually enjoy this time more,” Muguruza said.

“I’m pretty happy with my serve and controlling the emotions. To be back in a Grand Slam is always difficult, so I’m excited with the way I’m playing.”

Muguruza faces Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck or Slovenia’s Polona Herzog in the second round.

Briton Johanna Konta is also through to second round after beating Natalia Vikhlyantseva of Russia 7-5, 7-6 (7).
