FOOTBALL- In the wake of FIFA World Cup, police authorities have upped the ante against bookies. Hong Kong police recently busted a gambling ring consisting of 42 men and 3 women and seized bets worth HK$78 million (US$9.9 million, Rs 67 crore).

In an operation Wednesday night codenamed “Blazespike”, police arrested the bookies for offences including illegal bookmaking and managing unlawful gambling establishments.

“Preliminary investigation shows that those arrested include the mastermind and core members of the syndicate. Some of them have a triad background,” police said in a statement.

“The police believe this operation has successfully dismantled an illegal bookmaking syndicate.”

Chinese police also carried out a similar operation and arrested another five men believed to be part of the same gambling ring.
