TENNIS- India’s Sumit Nagal will make his Grand Slam debut at the US Open against 20 time champion Roger Federer on Monday.
Sumit, 22, defeated Brazil’s Joao Menezes 5-7 6-4 6-3 in two hours and 27 minutes in the third and last qualifying round on Friday night.
Nagal is only the fifth Indian after Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri, Saketh Myneni and Prajnesh Gunneswaran to feature in a Grand Slam singles main draw.
As Prajnesh is also playing in the US Open, India will have two players in the Grand Slam main draw for the first time since 1998 when Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi competed at the Wimbledon.
“Playing Roger at the US Open at night is every qualifier's dream and nightmare and I think this experience will both be a confidence booster and a career-defining moment for him," Said Bhupathi about Nagal’s Grand Slam debut.
"He needs to enjoy the moment and go for his shots," suggested Bhupathi.
