TEHRAN- An Iranian man has been publicly flogged 80 times after being convicted of consuming alcohol when he was a 14 or 15 years old boy.
The man only identified as "M R" was lashed 80 times in a square in the eastern city of Kashmar on Tuesday.
As per prosecutors, the man was arrested in 2006-2007 and was sentenced to 80 lashes the next year but it remains a mystery why the punishment was carried out more than 10 years later.
Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Director, Philip Luther, condemned the incident and said, “The circumstances of this case are absolutely shocking, representing another horrific example of the Iranian authorities' warped priorities.
"No-one, regardless of age, should be subjected to flogging; that a child was prosecuted for consuming alcohol and sentenced to 80 lashes beggars belief."
He asked for abolishment of all forms of corporal punishment.
